History of Busena Marine Park

From here, I would like to delve deeper into the history of the Busena Underwater Park!

Half a century weaving the history and nature of Okinawa’s sea

Located in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island, Busena Underwater Park celebrates its 50th anniversary this year since its opening on August 8, 1970, and continues to attract numerous visitors as a symbol of tourism and nature conservation in Okinawa.

In this commemorative year, we look back on the history of the park and its current initiatives.

Half a century since the opening of the marine attraction

Busena Underwater Park is located in the beautiful west coast area of Nago City, Okinawa, and its opening marked the beginning of a new page in Okinawa’s tourism industry.

The park is part of the “Okinawa National Coastal Park” and is designated as a “marine area park” known especially for its beautiful underwater scenery.

The park’s underwater observation tower and glass-bottomed boats have provided visitors with the opportunity to observe marine life in its natural environment up close, and have conveyed the wonder of Okinawa’s ocean to people in Japan and abroad.

Environmental Challenges and Conservation

The Busena Underwater Park is more than just a place offering beautiful waters. Environmental protection activities within the park are especially important.

Coral reefs and marine life in Okinawa are under various threats, including the influx of red soil, the effects of global warming, and feeding damage by crown-of-thorns starfish. The park is making efforts to maintain the balance of the ecosystem by focusing on coral transplantation and protection of marine life.

Specific activities include the release of 2,000 juvenile taman, a typical fish, on “Ocean Day” in 2020.

Tourism and SDGs in Practice

In the future, Busena Underwater Park plans to strengthen both tourism promotion and SDGs activities under the catchphrase “conveying the charm of Okinawa’s sea and preserving the natural environment.

While confronting global environmental issues, we will also actively engage in education and awareness activities to help people love and understand the value of Okinawa’s oceans.

Impact on tourists and local communities

The presence of the Busena Underwater Park is also significant for the local economy.

Approximately 300,000 visitors come to the park annually, many of them foreign tourists. The park is not only a tourism resource for the region, but also aims to build a sustainable tourism model by deepening cooperation with the local community.

The 50th anniversary of Busena Underwater Park is not just a commemorative year, but an opportunity for further progress in the future.

We will continue to share the wonders of nature that this beautiful park has to offer with many people and contribute to the preservation of the global environment. Together with all who love the Okinawan sea, Busena Underwater Park will continue to move forward into the future.
