Overview and highlights of the 2025 event

Date, time and venue

  • Date: Saturday, April 19, 2025
  • Venue: Ginowan Seaside Park (Tropical Beach), Ginowan City, Okinawa, Japan
  • Schedule: Doors open at 15:30, Fireworks start at 19:00, scheduled to end at 20:00.
    * The event will be held rain or shine. However, the event may be cancelled in case of stormy weather such as strong winds and high waves.

With the catchphrase “The earliest summer fireworks festival in Japan,” the Ryukyu Kaiyan Matsuri is a symbolic event that enlivens Okinawa in the season of the opening of the sea.

By using the most advanced digital ignition technology, the timing of the fireworks is precisely linked to each note of the music, and the different light effects at each moment are a feast for the eyes and ears.

Main Program: Fireworks Illusion

The hour-long fireworks show is a spectacular illusion in which a variety of fireworks are shot off in succession to exotic music and popular songs unique to Okinawa.

The highlight of the fireworks display is the “Design Fireworks ” produced by world-renowned fashion designer Junko Koshino, as well as the highly artistic fireworks display featuring ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

Stage performances and food stalls

One of the attractions of the festival is that in the evening before the fireworks begin, visitors can enjoy a stage filled with a tropical atmosphere, including live music by artists from Okinawa and an eisa performance by a local group.

Many food stalls featuring Okinawan delicacies will be set up at the venue, so visitors can enjoy Awamori, Okinawan soba noodles, taco rice, etc. while feeling the ocean breeze on the beach and relaxing as they wait for dusk to fall.

History and Origin: “Early Summer” Fireworks Liven Up Okinawa in Spring

The Ryukyu Kaiyan Matsuri was created in 2004 with the goal of attracting tourists to Okinawa in seasons other than summer, and to stimulate the Okinawan economy.

JAL (Japan Airlines), the special sponsor of the event, provides full support for the event, which has grown since its inception to become a tourist event that symbolizes “Spring in Okinawa.

  • 2009: Ikebana motif fireworks by flower arrangement artist Shogo KARIYAZAKI
  • Since 2010: Fashion designer Junko Koshino proposes original design fireworks every year.
  • 2020-2022: The event is postponed or cancelled due to the impact of the new coronavirus.
  • 2023: The event will return after a four-year absence and will be held for the 20th time with great success.

While the festival is thus held as an annual spring event, it also challenges itself to entertain tourists throughout the year by holding derivative events in the winter as well.

The number of tourists to Okinawa in April is estimated to have increased by 2.3 times compared to around 2003, indicating that the Kaien Matsuri Festival is a major contributor to the bustle of Okinawa’s spring season.

Participant Review: Both Inspiring and Challenging

Highly rated points: Fusion of sound and fireworks

Many people raved about the “wonderful sense of synchronization with the music” and “I got goosebumps from a sense of togetherness I have never seen before.

It is not just a series of fireworks, but a detailed production in accordance with the rhythm and melody of the song, and many people say that it is a “fireworks display they will never forget.

Pointing out to operations and congestion

On the other hand, some have pointed out inconveniences unique to large-scale events, such as delays in the start time, waiting time for shuttle buses, and traffic jams on the way home.

In particular, we found that visitors reported that they needed to allow plenty of time for the fireworks to be launched more than 30 minutes later than scheduled, and that they had to wait in long lines at the bus stops on their way home.

Misunderstanding of Ticket Seat Types

Because there are several types of “reserved seats,” some ticket types do not have chairs and require passengers to lay out their own seats in some areas.

In fact, some reviewers have said that they were disappointed because there were no chairs when they went there thinking they were in Seat A. So, please check the details of your seat type carefully before purchasing.

Satisfaction is high even when it rains.

In the past, there have been times when the festival was held in pouring rain, but even so, positive feedback has been received, such as “I am glad I saw the fireworks to the end even though I was soaking wet,” and “The fireworks smoky in the rain were fantastic.

Unless the weather is stormy, the event will be held as scheduled, so if you are well-prepared with rain gear, you may be able to have an unexpected emotional experience.
