What is Umikaji Terrace on Senaga Island?
Umikaji Terrace is an island resort facility located on Senaga Island, the closest remote island to the main island of Okinawa.
Surrounded by beaches, the blue sea and white buildings lining the sloping terrain are reminiscent of Amalfi in Italy and Santorini in Greece.
The spectacular Mediterranean resort-like view has become a hot topic of conversation, and since its opening in 2015, it has gained popularity as a new tourist destination in Okinawa.

Description: The “Shadow Heart,” which can be seen only once a day, is a miraculous photo spot where sunlight and shadows interweave. - Video content: “Senaga Starry Night: A Starry Tale of an Island Where the Sun Sets” is the theme for this fantastic show featuring sea creatures. Projection mapping is projected onto a white staircase as a canvas, and the beautiful images captivate the audience.
- Photo Point: At the end of the video, you can take commemorative photos in the projection mapping. Especially, the scenes of riding turtles and blending into the sea make for great, memorable photos.

History of Senaga Island
Ryukyu Mythology and Senaga Island
Senaga Island is deeply connected to the legend of the origin of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It is believed to be the first place where “Nankai Daijin Kanashi,” the child of “Amamikyo,” the goddess of the creation of Ryukyu, lived, and from there the history of Tomigusuku began.
Senaga Island as God’s Island
Known as “God’s Island,” the island was dotted with many utaki (sacred sites) and places of worship. Until before World War II, there were many places of worship on the island, such as Senaga Gusuku (castle ruins), “Child Treasure Rock” for praying for the birth of a child, and Iizumi (gur) for obtaining water.
War and the U.S. Military Base Era
In 1944, the residents were ordered to leave the island following the Battle of Okinawa, and the island was subsequently seized as a U.S. military base. After the island was returned to Japan in 1977, it was rebuilt as a tourist destination.
Culture and Dialect of Senaga Island
Old name “Angina”.
Senaga Island is locally called “Angina. This name is said to be a variant of “Anji (sand) island with an angler. The name of the event, “Anjinamuemei” in the local dialect also shows the traces of this name.
Traditional Events and Performances
- Hamauri (Hamagari)
On Senaga Island, “Hamagari” held on the third day of the third month of the lunar calendar was famous as an event. It is a sacred ceremony for women to purify themselves in the sea. - Kumiodori “Tezui no En”
Senaga Island is one of the settings for Kumiodori, a traditional Ryukyuan performing art created in the 18th century. The mysterious background of the island adds color to the story.
