Tidbits of knowledge about Manza-ga

Manzamo comes from the meaning “a field large enough for ten thousand people to sit on.
Along with its beautiful natural scenery, this place has an important historical background from the Ryukyu Kingdom period.
historical background
Manzakage was named after King Shokei of the Ryukyu Kingdom when he visited this area.
King Shokei ruled as King of Ryukyu from 1744 to 1803, and his visit was part of a patrol to audit local festivals and administration.
It was named Manzakage because the king was impressed by the scenic splendor of this vast place.
Related to Onna Nabby
Onna Nabi was a female Ryukyuan poet of the 1700s who improvised a poem when she received King Shokei at Manzakage.
Its songs, welcoming the king and his visitors, express the respect and affection of the local people.
Nabby’s monument has been installed in Manzagao, which keeps her poetic spirit and historical moment alive today.
The song, inscribed with the words, “The sound ofthewaves will be still, the sound of the wind will bestill,Shuri-tengasanashi bi goki haima,” means, “The sound of the waves will be still, the sound of the wind will be still, let us all worship the face of the King.
When King Shokei of the Ryukyus stopped by Manzakage in Onna Village during his tour of the northern part of the country, many people gathered at the plaza to get a glimpse of the king’s face.
It is said that Nabi, who saw the scene, improvised a song to welcome the king’s party during the ushidek (women beat drums and sing and dance in joy at the harvest of agriculture and fishing).
Tragedy during the Pacific War
During the Battle of Okinawa in World War II, Manzakage was the scene of tragedy.
As in many parts of Okinawa, many civilians were forced to commit mass suicide in Manzakage.
This historical fact has been passed down to future generations as an important reminder of the importance of peace and human dignity.
modern Manza Gauze
Today, Manzakage is known as a tourist destination with historical weight along with its spectacular natural scenery.
Visitors can enjoy the beautiful sea and lush green fields, but they can also reflect on the sad events of the past.
The site also serves as a place to reflect on history and find lessons for the future.
Manzakage, along with its natural beauty, is a place of multi-layered significance in the history, culture, and even tragic memory of the Ryukyu Islands.
It continues to provide more than just a tourist attraction for all who visit.
