Chatan,
the base you can walk

Almost everywhere in Okinawa needs a rental car. Chatan is the exception — a beach, a restaurant district and a bus terminal, all within a few streets of each other.

Okinawa is a rental-car island. Ask anyone and they will tell you that, and they are mostly right. Chatan is where that stops being true. The airport buses come straight here, the beach is a five-minute walk from the shops, and the restaurants are dense enough that you can eat differently every night without moving the car you did not rent.

It sits about 40 minutes north of Naha on the west coast, which is the other reason to consider it: close enough to the airport for a first or last night, far enough north that the drive to Churaumi shrinks from two hours to ninety minutes.

Why base here

and who it doesn't suit
01

You can arrive without driving

Four separate bus services run from Naha Airport, 37 departures a day between them, for ¥900–1,000. Nowhere else outside Naha has that.

02

Everything is walkable

Beach, shops, restaurants and the bus terminal sit within a few streets. You can land, drop bags and be eating within the hour.

03

It cuts the northern drive

Starting from Chatan instead of Naha takes about half an hour off the run to Churaumi. Over a return trip that is an hour back in your day.

!
Who it doesn't suit: if you came for empty white-sand beaches, this is not that. Chatan's shoreline is engineered — a seawall, a made beach, hotels behind it. The postcard beaches are further north, and you will need a car to reach them. Chatan is a town first and a beach second.

Covered bays, coaches, a shuttle stand and a bike port — set up inside an existing car park.

Okinawa has no rail network outside Naha's monorail, and buses have historically been something visitors were told to avoid. Chatan Gateway is an attempt to fix that in one place — opened in July 2024, in the public car park beside AEON Chatan.

It is not a grand building. It is a row of covered bus bays, a stand for hotel shuttles, a cabin with staff, a small shop with somewhere to sit, and a share-cycle port. But it puts every airport service into one place with a timetable you can read, which is the thing that was missing.

For a visitor the practical effect is simple: you can land at Naha, take one bus, and be standing in Chatan with your bags — no car, no transfers, no working out which of four operators goes where.

01

All four airport services stop here

TK05, KAR-CHA Liner, LIM-A limousine and route 143 all use these bays. Coaches large enough for tour groups fit under the canopy.

02

Shuttles and share bikes

Hotel shuttle vehicles use a marked stand here, and electric bicycles are available through Hello Cycling for getting around Mihama.

03

Staff, a shop and a seat

There is a cabin with staff who can explain the timetables, plus a shop with an eat-in space — useful when you have an hour to wait and luggage with you.

i
It runs as a prefectural trial, not a permanent terminal. The free Mihama loop shuttle that formed part of the same project already ended on 31 March 2026. The bus services themselves continue, but check the official site close to your trip rather than trusting a timetable printed elsewhere.

All four arrive at Chatan Gateway, the transport hub opposite the AEON store in Mihama — a short walk from American Village and the beach. The journey takes roughly 50 minutes. Staff there can explain the timetables, and electric bicycles are available through Hello Cycling.

By car it is about 40 minutes north on Route 58, turning left at the Kuwae intersection. Parking across the district is free.

!
The free Mihama loop shuttle has ended. It ran as part of a trial and stopped on 31 March 2026. Guides describing a free bus every 15 minutes — including some still online — are out of date. Free loop bus, every 15 min Chatan Gateway rents electric bicycles through Hello Cycling instead, and the district is walkable end to end.

Questions

Can I stay here without a rental car?+

Yes, and it is the main reason to choose Chatan. Four bus services run from Naha Airport — TK05 (12 a day), KAR-CHA Liner (5), LIM-A limousine (5) at ¥1,000, and route 143 at ¥900 with about 15 weekday services. Once here, the beach, shops and restaurants are all walkable.

Is the free shuttle around Mihama still running?+

No. It was part of a trial and ended on 31 March 2026. Pages still describing a free bus every 15 minutes are out of date. Electric bicycles are available from Chatan Gateway through Hello Cycling, and most of the district is a comfortable walk.

How far is it to Churaumi from here?+

About 90 minutes by car, against two hours from Naha. If the aquarium is on your list, a night in Chatan takes an hour of driving out of the round trip. Buy the discounted voucher at Michi-no-Eki Kyoda on the way.

Is there a Ferris wheel?+

Not since 2022. SKYMAX60 was dismantled and Rihga Royal Resort Okinawa Chatan opened on the site on 1 April 2026. Directions telling you to turn at the Ferris wheel no longer work — navigate to the Kuwae intersection instead.

When are the fireworks?+

Saturdays at 8pm, March to June only, from the Depot Island seafront — about three minutes, free. There are none outside those months, which catches out a lot of summer visitors. Details are in the American Village guide.
