Northern Okinawa

Motobu,
the town around Churaumi

Most people drive two hours here, see the aquarium, and drive back. The peninsula holds considerably more than that — and much of it costs nothing.

2 hrs from Naha Churaumi Aquarium Free park & dolphin show Reachable by bus

Motobu is a peninsula on the north-west shoulder of Okinawa's main island, and it is the single densest concentration of things to see outside Naha. Churaumi Aquarium is the headline, but it sits inside a free national park, next to a beach, ten minutes from lanes of two-hundred-year-old trees, and across a bridge from an island with clear water.

The mistake visitors make is treating it as a single stop. Two hours each way from Naha is a long drive for one building — and the aquarium takes two to three hours, which leaves the rest of the day unaccounted for. This page is what fills it.

Two hours each way is the constraint. A same-day return from Naha gives you roughly six usable hours here. If you want the aquarium and Bise and Sesoko, stay a night in Motobu or Nakijin — it also puts Nakijin and Kouri Island in reach the next morning.

Getting there

By car

Expressway north to its last exit at Kyoda IC, then Route 58 and Route 449 around the peninsula. About two hours from Naha Airport all in.

Parking at the aquarium and the park is free.

By bus

The Yanbaru Express Bus airport line runs from Naha Airport up the west coast to Kinen-Koen-mae, the stop for Ocean Expo Park.

It stops at Michi-no-Eki Kyoda on the way, so the discounted voucher works without a car.

Onward

Motobu Port has ferries to Ie Island, the flat island with the cone-shaped hill you can see from Bise. Nakijin Castle and Kouri Island are both about 30 minutes east.

Questions

How long from Naha?+

About two hours by car, using the expressway to its final exit at Kyoda and then following the coast. The Yanbaru Express Bus airport line also runs to the Churaumi area, so a car is not essential.

Is it worth staying the night?+

If you want more than the aquarium, yes. Four hours of driving leaves a thin day. Staying over lets you walk Bise early — when it is quiet and cool — and puts Nakijin Castle and Kouri Island within reach the following morning.

What's there besides the aquarium?+

Ocean Expo Park surrounds it and is free, dolphin show included. Bise has the fukugi lanes. Emerald Beach is inside the park. Sesoko Island is across a bridge with good swimming. Motobu Port runs ferries to Ie Island.

Where do I buy aquarium tickets cheaper?+

Michi-no-Eki Kyoda, at the end of the expressway, sells adult vouchers at ¥2,000 against the ¥2,180 gate price. Cash only, from 8:30 — earlier than the aquarium opens, and directly on your route.
